Ray Panko Ray Panko. Before coming to the university, he was a project manager at Stanford Research Institute now SRI Internationalwhere he conducted research for nearly every major telecommunications firm. He received his doctorate in communication from Stanford University, where he graduated with a 4.
His interest in networking began in the early s, when the interdisciplinary Stanford “communications mafia” was at its peak and when a young doctoral student could work on verifying the effectiveness of the small satellite dishes we use today, could manage the design of a campus-wide LAN using cable television technology, and could pick a dissertation topic relevant enough for the White House to fund.
Stanford Research Institute was even more fun because the author got to work on the ARPANET during its first few years, participate in discussions that defined e-mail, and work for Doug Engelbart, who invented the mouse and outline processing and who built the world’s first working hypertext system and distributed team support system.
In retrospect, it is amazing that many of the things he worked on then took so many years to come to fruition. At the University of Hawaii, he discovered that teaching networking was even more fun than conducting research in networking and that writing a textbook could introduce thousands of students to this exciting field.

I was expecting a lot more of this book. It’s probably a good book for a business person to understand technical infrastructure but for those already in IT, it is more of a review. For people in the technical field the level that this book goes into is pretty much known but for those in non technical areas or just getting in technology then its a good book.
Main issue I have is the price. For the price I think the book is very much lacking the level of technical review that is required to fully understand data networks.
If you want to really understand networking, pick up a Cisco book for a lot less. To me this book should be no more than fifty dollars. I’m a Computer Information Systems major in my university’s business school and took this class the first semester of my senior year. Telecomm is more towards the technical end of our curriculum, but the information I got from this textbook — and the associated class — was invaluable.
Even though I didn’t have a very technical background like most Engineering or Computer Science students probably do, I found the book to be relatively easy to read. It went into sufficient depth that I was able to thoroughly understand the major concepts, but wasn’t so comprehensive in the material it covered to the point that I lost sight of the big picture.
One person found this helpful. I’ve recently completed a course using this textbook. It has been a long time if ever since I have actually enjoyed reading a textbook.
I feel it should be mandatory reading for all authors and potential authors who will ever feel the need to publish a textbook for undergraduate level work in a technical field.
Most of the many corrections on the online corrections page are minor and insignificant i.
With press deadlines in technologies being what they are, it is fully understandable. The choice to include those corrections a gave me a sense of security in that it demonstrated the author’s thoroughness and b proves that you don’t have to cut a new edition of your work every six months which can be quite annoying for anyone who is looking to get a specific edition for class. I was pretty much convinced that it was impossible to design and publish a textbook in a technical field of a caliber such as this.
In general, technical authors either confuse the reader by over complicating the layout and material or they put the reader to sleep by being overly shallow and overly redundant. This is not the case for this book. In the words of Goldilocks, this one is “just right”. I strongly recommend it to anyone, whether they have a class requirement for it or not. I purchased this book as it was required reading for a Masters Degree course. I have extensive networking experience, so much of the text is review of items I have forgotten.
However, there are new takes on many topics that have been of interest. I like the review questions scattered throughout the chapter instead of all at the end as in most text books. The experiments are well concieved and interesting. The authors also throw a bit of dry humor into the text, which greatly enhances the read. I have read a lot of textbooks over my 40 years since high school, and find this one very good. This is a college textbook. The book is decent for understanding the networks and telecommunications.
Its good, but it seems to flow too fast if you’re just learning the subject.
The review methods are poor; no assistance is provided by a CD or the online website. It’s not work networkd current prime price. This book is great, it starts from the beginning of the networking age and goes through all the newest technologies and ideas about networking. Book covers everything, this is one book I won’t be selling back. A really good reference book for the basics of networking businss rules to follow as well when getting into the networking field. I have to say this is one of the best put together textbooks Ive come across so far.

The thing I like the most is there isn’t a r.lanko chapter and then the answers for the review questions are somewhere in the last 65 pages This book started my career in IT, as a University course. This book is straightforward with diagrams all throughout. Some people may just not have like learning the material to not like the book itself, but it will show you everything you need to know to get a good Basis, foundation, in Networking Not certifications, etc.
