Do you know what happens when you fall in love? You feel the rhymes running through your veins because love makes you see the beauty everywhere! This political background is important to the story because Neruda is sent abroad as an ambassador, but his friends in Chile are always in touch with him. This is a short story with a little bit of every emotion: I think this is the first book I have read in which a real author — Pablo Neruda — is one of the main characters in the story, and I liked how at first he was distant and serious but then he makes friends with our illiterate skarneta of the village.

The Postman by Antonio Skármeta

Sounds like a sweet story. And you are right — when you fall in love, you become a poet. Isi, there is a wonderful tne based on this novel — an Italian film — called Il Postino. In the film, I think the location is changed to Italy of course!

One dkarmeta the reasons the film is famous because the screenplay was written by skarmwta actor who also played the lead role — it was a labour of love for him, although he was very ill. He kept going all the way through the production of the film, and then, on the final day when everything was finished, his heart gave out and he died.

So sad — but a beautiful achievement and a fine tribute to his work both as a writer and an actor.

Here is a link: I knew there was a film, but I had no idea about the story behind it. Yes, I must watch it! Sounds very romantic, thanks for the information, Leander! I find I do best with poetry when I can read and discuss with a group.

Thanks for the recommendation! Sounds like a lovely read.

Hope you like it, Lianne. Though I love to read poetry I often keep that in my own language. I find it harder to understand the meaning when it is in a different language.
